Whenever we are listening to someone telling us about their story, we of course hear their perception of events, no doubt the other party have a completely different take on events.
Hence the fact that there are two sides to every story.
As a support group it is not for us to judge or take sides, we are there to support those who seek our help.
I am absolutely certain, that what I say about how we became estranged from our granddaughter is completely different from what the other party have said in the past and presumably still does say.
Interestingly of course we both believe we have the correct version.
The honest truth is that that all involved had a part to play, it may have been small stuff, the wrong word, the wrong decision ect, but all adding up to total lack of communication. Until finally all sense is of reality is lost.
What is certain is what started off as being an adult spat, has left children damaged beyond repair in some cases. Children who are self harming, children who are desperately unhappy, children who have no self worth, confused, angry and resentful.
Who can blame them?
There is a huge focus at the moment on Mental Health, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry speaking out to enable others to do the same.
The young people who have experienced or are still going through estrangement and alienation are the silent ones, the silent voices are still not being heard. Hundreds of thousands of children are now having to face family turmoil, family separation is at epidemic proportions and yet, rarely is it held up to be a factor in the younger generations Mental Health problems.
As a society we have to wake up to the fact that children who have been abused in this way, have deep scars, some of which will never heal.
I heard today of a 13 year old grandchild who had been estranged and her words, alienated, from her grandparents for most of her young life. She took it upon herself to find them and arrived on their doorstep, she had turned against her parents, wants nothing to do with them. She is now living with her grandparents.
As I have said so many times before, in this power and control struggle that goes on, there are no winners.
These grandparents are now beginning a very long journey of building bridges and building back a relationship with a very damaged young lady.
As the title of my blog says today.
There are three sides to every story, mine, yours and then the truth.
Only you know the truth.
