Safeguard children

There are many children across the UK who are the silent victims of domestic violence.

Children who carry the burden of fear often not confiding in anyone, some even think it is quite normal for one of their parents to be shouting and hitting the other.

It is anything but normal.

Last week I met people who are changing that for the children.

A now retired police sergeant David Carney-Haworth set up Operation Encompass http://www.operationencompass.org , 5 years ago, after a conversation with his wife Headteacher Elizabeth Carney-Haworth.

There was a need for sharing information, so that schools are made aware very quickly if there has been an occurrence of a domestic violence incident in a home where a child lives, and that a nominated Key Adult, will then give the necessary support to that child.

Having worked in schools for over 15 years, it was something I had not heard of before, but of course it seems so obvious. School is often the place where these vulnerable children feel safe and secure.

In the last 5 years Operation Encompass has spread and it surely should be adopted by every police authority.

As a society we have a duty of care to every child.
