Minister for Justice, Dame Esther and Grandparents.

Today Marc and I went to Westminster and met up with Dame Esther Rantzen, Nigel Huddleson MP and the Minister of State for Justice Dominic Rabb.

It was a very early start and we seemed to be in perpetual motion for most of the day!

We discussed the rights of grandchildren  having a continuing relationship with grandparents after family breakdown, and stressed that this is not about adults but about the rights of grandchildren.

The possibility of a small change to The Children Act was also discussed, where there is a presumption of that continuing relationship with grandparents and or extended family, Nigel Huddleson MP will contact the DFE as The Children Act is under their jurisdiction and will report back.

There is no doubt that dialogue has now started and we need to keep the pressure on, the door is ajar we need to keep pushing it open.

If you are a grandparent denied contact with your grandchildren, please write to your MP, it needs to be as many as possible, the more MP’s who get these landing on their desk the better.

I would though, strongly suggest that you move away from Grandparents Rights, rephrase to Grandchildren’s Rights, keep it focussed on the children.

The damage that this is having on a whole generation of children and the damage on their mental health is enormous, and will have a life long effect on their own relationships.

A cultural shift, so that denying contact is as socially unacceptable as drink driving.

Remember the little 6 year old, who asked during his school circle time, “Can someone tell me how to tell my mum that I miss and love my grandma and grandad,  and I want to see them because  she won’t listen to me.”

That little boys voice needs to be heard loud and clear.
