Government funding for charities

In May this year charities will be banned from using government funding for lobbying and campaigning ministers, – “activity intended to influence – or attempt to influence – Parliament, government or political parties”.

According to statistics last year the UK government gave the voluntary sector just under £10b in grants.

Charities will still be able to lobby ect as long as they don’t use the money given by government, in other words tax payers money, how on earth  they will differentiate I am not sure, there is a concern that their freedom of speech will be curtailed.

For me, I have always believed that charities should be independent of government funding. It is their very independence that makes them able to campaign for change.
