Grandchildren and GCSE results.

A bittersweet day today.

Our son who has been estranged from his daughter for 10 years, has just had a response from her school and they sent him her GCSE results, we are all so proud of her achievements.

She is a young lady who has had to go through some difficult times in her life and yet has kept focussed.

He is one of the lucky Dads, I suppose, that the schools have always done what they are supposed to do in sending him annual reports ect, there are hundreds of thousands of non-resident parents who don’t hear anything from the schools.

The bitter part is of course that this has to happen this way at all.

That we are not able to celebrate together.

Two people bring children into the world, from that moment on they have a responsibility to ensure whatever may happen in their adult relationship that it never impacts on the children.

Children should be able and allowed to share the good times and the bad whenever they need to,with both parents, not to be filled with guilt just by mentioning a targeted parents name, or to have been led to believe that the targeted parent doesn’t care.

If by the remotest chance our granddaughter ever reads this, I am saying loud and clear, “Dad and all your family members are so, so proud of you. You are in our thoughts every minute of everyday, always in our hearts.”

So to all the young people who sat their exams this year and who were not able to share those results with both parents, congratulations to each and every one of you, we all hope that your achievements will allow you to continue on your life journey, in the knowledge that you can do anything you put your mind to.

Even if your results were maybe not what you had hoped for, make sure you notice opportunities and grab them with both hands, this is your time, time to be the people you want to be, to make your mark on the world and to make a difference.

Well done.
