Don’t ever say it will never happen to you.

At a recent event and was talking to someone who asked what I did, as they do!

When I told her that I founded a support group for grandparents, she looked at me in amazement. She said what on earth for?

Well, of course enough said and I told her, she absolutely did not get it at all.

She said that all families fall out and if someone doesn’t get on with someone else it is up to them to keep their distance.

I listened, as she carried on, and then I asked her if she had grandchildren.

“Yes, I do I have 4.”

I asked her how often she saw them and it was often, so I asked her what she would do if one of the parents suddenly said, that she couldn’t see them again, no phone calls nothing.

She looked at me aghast, and said,”Oh that would never happen,”

I went on further, saying that grandparents who do find themselves in this position suffer from severe depression and some are suicidal, her response was well they must have been dreadful grandparents then.

She didn’t even take a breath to think about how grandparents suffer when this happens, let alone the grandchildren.

On my way home I pondered about what had been said, and thought about families in general, and even within our own family we have relationships that just don’t work, and I don’t mean the grandchildren relationship, sometimes it is true that people just don’t get on, don’t actually like each other, and do cut us out of their lives. Sometimes you know why but very often you have no idea. Something may have been said or done that someone feels resentful about, and thats, that, nothing.

Just thinking about my own relationships, made the hurt and pain resurrect itself, and left me wondering what on earth had I done.

I hope and pray that the grandparent I was talking to, never has to face being denied contact with her grandchildren, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but I just wish people would not jump to conclusions and round it all up neatly by saying we must be bad people.

“There are indeed two sides to every story, and then there is the truth.”

Will we ever know the truth?
