Who is accountable for the welfare of our grandchildren?

Over and over again I hear the same thing, Social Services not listening to a grandparent.

Why is it that when a grandparent alerts them of fears for their grandchildren, it always seems to be their fault?

I was taught when working with children as I did for over 15 years, that if you have any concerns about a child’s welfare then it is your duty to report it, not spend time thinking about it, but acting.

The first port of call would be whoever was the recognised person responsible for Child Protection who would then inform the authorities.

Authorities that the general public believe are looking after these very vulnerable children.

Of course there are some SW who are trying to fight against the tide, who really do put children first, but there are many who don’t.

I am not to sure how they sleep at night.

A grandparent who goes to SS’s desperate to get help for their grandchildren, then are on the receiving end of abuse themselves, from those who are the perpetrators, because Ss’s in their wisdom have gone straight to the perpetrators and told them of the accusation.

Surely, they should talk with the children first?

Telling the perpetrator is in my book certainly not putting the interest of the child first.

Time and time again everyone is told how important it is to listen to children, but when we do no-one it seems acts on their behalf.

Every time something tragic happens we have some CEO from one council after another, saying “lessons will be learnt.”

But they never are.

It seems it is perfectly ok for children to have bruising, for children to cry because they don’t like the way someone tickles them, or behaves inappropriately towards them.

The saddest thing of all is that the children no longer believe anyone will help them.

What are we doing to this generation?

Who is accountable?

The system is failing these children every single day of their young lives.

My heart breaks for them all.
