How do we live with ourselves when we know that thousands of children are living in homes where they are abused and neglected everyday, maybe hundreds of thousands.
We will never know the true figure as they have to remain silent, for their own protection.
Abuse and neglect comes in many different forms, maybe not headline worthy, but nevertheless, it is abuse and neglect.
We have all read about the tragic cases of children being harmed and worse over the years and that continues to this day.
What about the children who are told repeatedly that they are stupid, they are worthless and not loved. Those who have no decent food to eat, not because of financial issues, but just because a parent doesn’t care.
Those that are kept from one parent or other family members, not because they don’t want to see them but because an adult in their life says so and has an axe to grind.
Children whose fridge is full of alcohol.
All communication is taken from them, anything that is precious to them is smashed or thrown away. Family photo albums ripped up in front of them.
I am not making any of this up, it is fact.
What makes a parent behave this way?
It is cruel to say the least, almost back to Dickensian times, total control and someone powering over another, there is no excuse at all for a parent to treat any child this way.
What is so disturbing about this is that often within a family breakdown situation, Social Services seem to turn a blind eye, those in high authority do not listen to the children, they are allowing them to be living in these abusive and neglectful relationships.
Those who do allow this should face our young people, should be made to listen to the result of them allowing this to continue, children who are suffering at the hands of people who are vindictive and narcissistic.
I don’t know how these children will ever grow up having normal relationships, they have learnt from experts how to inflict pain on others, mentally, how to break people. They have learnt that even those who are supposed to protect them from harm, don’t.
Where do we go from here?
How do we heal these damaged children?
When the opportunity comes, with love.
Nothing more nothing less, just love.
Show them that whatever they have been through they are strong enough to move forward, they can learn to trust again,we will be there for them to steady the path.
