Over the last 8 years I have encountered all sorts of reactions to what we try and do, mostly positive but sadly it is the negatives that grate on your mind, that keep you awake at night and fill you with despair and sadness. The negativity eats away at the very core of you.

I suppose when you are supporting families who are broken and lost, there will always be people who are just waiting to mud sling, it may be those who have never experienced the loss of a children/grandchild through family breakdown, it may be those who are causing the breakdown in the first place, it may be the entire family justice system.

There are some superb dedicated people working with families, who celebrate the very best but also have to endure the very worst in people. The best being a family reunited, children able to have the love of all family members, the worse being, people who will try to discredit or question your motives.

I don’t suppose I will ever understand why it is necessary for people to behave in such an appalling way, so I will try not to waste my energy on such things, but it is easier said than done.

With the use of social media, remarks or comments go viral at the click of the mouse, damage is instant and it can take the issues surrounding family separation back years.

Everyone I know who works tirelessly towards reuniting families, does so because they care.

We may have different approaches but the end game is still the same.

To all of you who are supporting, encouraging and fighting against our unjust system, keep doing what you do, you know it’s the children whose eyes light up when they are reunited that matter. They are the reason we all do what we do.
